Grants
The Howard County Soil & Water Conservation District has been awarded a grant
to put conservation practices on the ground in two small watersheds in northwestern
Howard County.  These watersheds are for Pete’s Run and the headwaters, or
feeder streams of Little Deer Creek (McKay Dredge and Harrison Harlan Ditch).
The grant comes from the Indiana Department of Environmental Management
(IDEM) through its “319 program” (section 319 of the federal Clean Water Act) that
provides funding for nonpoint pollution control efforts.

This grant follows a planning project (2003 - 2005) that produced watershed
management plans based on what local landowners and the SWCD board identified
as water quality problems.

Landowners within the watersheds of Pete’s Run or Little Deer Creek Headwaters
are eligible for cost share funding to install conservation practices.  The project will
also sponsor educational programs for septic system maintenance, tile and drainage
information, and  materials for self-evaluation of water quality protection in the
home or on the farmstead.  This project will be completed by May of 2009.
